so, what's the exact problem? Are you able to extract the containing tar file? No, I am not even trying to extract the file. I am trying to selectively access the data inside of the 7z file as you would with a zip or gz file. Is this possible? Also, why would the 7z utility give you the file name, but the binding (based on that utility?) would not?

Could you point me to some java code doing something similar to "xz --list" for me to take it from there?

clusters are typically about one megabyte So, one has to check the starting bytes of every megabyte of the data file . . .? the zip file format has a way to descriptively list the metadata of the contained files (its "zip entries") and selectively extract just the files you need without having to decompress the whole file. is this possible with a zim file?

it works wherever it finds the pdf file, but at times you have only read-only access to the directory where the data feed is, or, is there a way to trick pdftohtml using the shell or any other utility?
