VLC is an open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework, which plays most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. VLC media player is simple, fast, and powerful. It plays everything, files, discs, webcams, devices, and streams. VLC plays most codecs (MPEG-2, DivX, H.264, MKV, WebM, WMV, MP3, etc.) so no codec packs are needed. Babel.TV started life as a desktop shell and replacement MythTV frontend, aiming to be a light, fast and elegant entertainment platform. It has grown to encompass instant communication, Web services and support for popular playback devices and phones.

A set of command line tools for indexing CD/DVD media: cdindex is for indexing, cdfind - for search (similar to Unix find) and cdbrowse is a "plugin" for MC allowing to browse the database. Data are stored in a special binary format.

CDDE (CD Detect & Execute utility) detects when a CD/DVD-ROM drive has a disc inserted and executes a command specified in its config file. This means a DVD can be inserted and a DVD player will start, or a data CD will be automatically mounted, etc.

The libdvdetect library provides fast lookup of DVDs, similar to existing services for CDs like Gracenote, freeDB or MusicBrainz. The DVD Detection Library (libdvdetect) is a library to lookup DVDs in a database and provide information about e.g. title, UPC/EAN or even cover arts. It is OS-independent and compiles for Windows or Unix operating systems. Mac support is also planned. What the library does not provide is DVD ripping and decryption. It reads the structure (e.g. titles and chapters) and generates a special checksum to look up the database. More details at http://www.dvdetect.de. The database can also be searched using a web browser at http://search.dvdetect.de/. Movieconvert is an easy to use graphical frontend to mencoder (from the mplayer project). It tends on users which don't like the command line. It is not a dvd ripping or video cutting tool, it is a tool for converting videos. It is build in C using GTK+.

A Xine frontend specifically designed for DVD playback. It has a nice OSD and works with lcdproc. Very suitable for DVD boxes like MythTV.
