Migrate medit to Python3 and gtk3

hi everyone,

medit has been my favorate text/code editor for well over a decade.

since it was removed from Debian/Ubuntu a few years ago due to the discontinuation of Python2, I had forked the code (v1.2.92pre) in my github repo (https://github.com/fangq/medit), and made some changes so I can still build a local copy for my own use (mostly on Ubuntu LTS). Aside from the Python plugin that was not working (including terminal via vte), the main editor seems to still work ok.

in the last week, I decided to bring back the terminal feature, which was really useful in the paste. This involves a more systematic migration from Python2 to Python3. With the help of AI coding assistant (Claude), I managed to upgraded all Python units from 2 to 3. This Python3-compatible version can be found in the main branch of my repo. You can see the commit history here:

However, this is not enough for bring back the Terminal, apparently, the Python3 vte requires gtk3. So, I decided to take on the inevitable path - i.e. migrating medit from gtk2 to gtk3.

after about a week of intensive updates with interactive debugging assisted by the AI coding tools, I was able to successfully port most of the mooutils units to gtk3, and successfully build the binary, re-enable the Terminal plugin, and fixed many of the cosmetic issues due to gtk3 migration. most of the functionalities seem to work - including python console, side panels etc. There are some minor cosmetic issues (such as Window submenu show 2-row at initial expansion). will continue polishing it. compilation also has some minor warnings.

I just want to share with everyone in case it is of interest to you. If you want to build it, just clone the repo, and try to build it locally.

I tagged the gtk3 version to a higher version number (1.8.0x) so that it can be separately managed.

Is there a sample somewhere that I can copy? I've created:
~/.local/share/medit/tools/001-run-LISP-script.lua

which contains:
-- this is a comment
langs=clisp,sbcl; file-filter=.lisp,.lsp; need-doc; need-save; need-file

medit refuses to load this tool when it is launched. It does not appear in menu/Tools!

What could be the problem? TIA ...

Hm, I see... It's really sad to hear this, medit has been my bread-and-butter for so much time. I still remember when I was looking for "something as light and minimal as leafpad but with tabs" and found so much more in medit. Right now mousepad is serving me as a temporal replace, but what can I say..., your software is so much better.
Anyway, I appreciate your sincerity and clarity and even more I thank you for the work you have done, which has been so helpful to me.

Flatpack isn't solving the problem of building gtk and other dependencies, which are very much dead at this point. I hate to say this, but it's simpler and easier to just use gedit or visual studio code.

Thanks a lot for your response, Yevgen. I was thinking..., would a flatpak version (using https://flathub.org/home) be a way to keep the software available avoiding the need of porting?
