Dynamic Select by Color

While working with indexed images, i often need to add the transparency color (index 0) to various places in the image (such as creating transparent sections in a wooden fence, so it will allow other layers to show thru). I can use the Select Color tool to determine which parts of the image already contain this masking color. As i paint more areas, i need to be able to monitor how much of the image is masked. Instead of painting, color-selecting, inverting the selection, painting, etc, over and over again, it would be helpful that, as i painted, the color i have painted with is automatically added to the selection, assuming the new paintstrokes fall within the threshhold of the selection.
