Recompiled with libcurl4-openssl-dev and now is working. Can be closed.

I wonder if the compilation process might be tweaked to catch this problem or if this is a bug in whatever SSL lib was used previously.
libcurl4-openssl-dev fixed it, you may have to run ./configure again :) thank you very much
