Since most servos operate between 4.5V and 7.5V, the 5V version should work as long as yours falls within that range. If I connect USB first and then 12V, everything works fine. If I connect 12V first (the Arduino LEDs light up) and then USB, the LEDs turn off, the resistor gets very hot, and it won't connect. At this point, if I disconnect and reconnect the 12V, everything works fine. So, for me, connecting 12V first is a problem. I don't understand what's happening.
