    Linux Kernel

    Linux Kernel

    Linux Kernel source tree

The Linux Kernel is the core component of the Linux operating system—a free, open-source, monolithic, Unix-like system kernel initiated by Linus Torvalds in 1991 and since evolved into a foundational technology powering everything from servers and supercomputers to smartphones and embedded devices. There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory, several of them using the reStructuredText markup notation. Extensive filesystem compatibility (ext4, Btrfs, FUSE, XFS, etc.) Broad hardware architecture support (x86, ARM, mainframe, embedded, etc.)

    OpenWrt

    OpenWrt

A Linux operating system targeting embedded devices

OpenWrt Project is a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices. Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developers, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.

    WipeFreeSpace

    WipeFreeSpace

Secure wiping/shredding of free disk space with many methods

...The following filesystems are supported: - Ext2/3/4, - NTFS, - XFS, - ReiserFSv3/4, - FAT12/16/32, - MinixFS1/2, - JFS, - HFS/HFS+, - OCFS. The following wiping methods are supported: Gutmann-like, random, Schneier, DoD. Additionally, WipeFreeSpace can finalize wiping the filesystem by writing blocks of zeros, which is friendly for sparse files, virtual systems and other places where zeroed-out space is not physically allocated. See the project homepage https://wipefreespace.sourceforge.io and the project Wiki in the menu above. To prevent clear-text data from being left on the drive in the first place, you can use LibSecRm (https://libsecrm.sourceforge.io), which wipes the data on-the-fly.

    etherdfs

an ethernet-based file system for DOS

EtherDFS is an 'installable filesystem' TSR for DOS. It maps a drive from a remote computer (typically Linux-based) to a local drive letter, using raw ethernet frames to communicate. For years, I was using LapLink to transfer files between my various "retro" computers. It works, yes, but it's also annoyingly slow and requires constant attention. One day I thought, "Wouldn't it be amazing if all my PCs could share a common network drive, similarly to how NFS operates in the *nix world?". ...

    pwmd

Serves XML element content over a UDS or TLS.

Pwmd allows a (libpwmd) client to store and retrieve data in an encrypted XML file via an element path. An element path is a TAB delimited string where each element name is a depth of the element tree similar to how a filesystem hierarchy is organized. Each element of the element path may also contain an ACL to limit client access to an element path; beit a client connecting over UDS or TLS. An element may also contain a "target "attribute that resolves to another element path in the XML document similar to a symbolic link in a filesystem. Pwmd also supports multiple connections to the same data file (with locking), obtaining a passphrase when needed via a pinentry program or key file, gpg-agent support as well as smartcards, caching options and more.

    fpart

Sort files and pack them into partitions

...Fpart also includes a live mode, which allows it to crawl very large filesystems and produce partitions in live. Hooks are available to act on those partitions (e.g. immediatly start a transfer using rsync(1)) without having to wait for the filesystem traversal job to be finished. Used this way, fpart can be seen as a powerful data migration tool.
